Since we last went to print there have been massive fluctuations in the price of nickel. The spring edition reported a rise of over £8,000 / tonne to £25,238. Since then it has dropped by 48% to around £13,000 / tonne.
The use of nickel is common in cable production, as plating on copper for high temperature cables and also as a pure nickel conductor for very high temperatures of up to 750° in cables like the G-Temp 600.
We have seen plenty of uncertainty and speculation surrounding metal prices in 2007. After the surge in copper, nickel has fallen back but is still twice the price it was two years ago. As ever, leave the speculating to the traders and try to fix your cost where you can.
