What is BS5308 Cable?
BS5308 / PAS5308 cables are commonly called instrumentation cable and BS5308 is considered "the" standard for this type of cable. BS5308 cables come in two different types;
BS5308 Part 1 - PE insulated instrumentation cables - British Standard BS5308 Part 1 specifies both the requirements and the dimensions of PE insulated cables in pairs with or without screen(s). It provides the option to incorporate a steel wire armour. Part 1 is further categorised as Types 1 & 2.
Part 1 Type 1 (unarmoured)
These have Polyethylene insulation (PE) and a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Sheath.
Low smoke halogen free (LSHF) is also available.
Part 1 Type 2 (armoured)
These have PE insulation, PE bedding and a PVC sheath.
Armour: steel wire armour (SWA).
BS5308 Part 2 - PVC insulated instrumentation cables - British Standard BS5308 Part 2 specifies requirements for PVC insulated cables, in multicore and multi-pair construction, with or without screens. It provides the option to incorporate a single wire armour. Part 2 is further categorised as Types 1 & 2.
Part 2 Type 1 (unarmoured)
These have PVC insulation and a PVC sheath. LSHF is also available
Part 2 Type 2 (armoured)
These have PVC insulation , PVC bedding and a PVC sheath.
Armour: steel wire armour (SWA)
Features and Benefits
- Voltage range 300 / 500V
- Temperature Rating: -15°C to +90°C (maximum conductor operating temperature)
- We use XPLE insulation which gives our stock +90°C operating temp vs the standards +65°C
- Colour: Black or Blue
- Pairing: Two insulated conductors uniformly twisted together with a lay not exceeding 100mm. Two pair cables without individual pair screens shall have four cores laid in quad formation around a central dummy. Pairs are assembled together using the reciprocating lay technique
- Collectively Screened (CAT)
- Individually and Collectively Screened (ICAT)
- Bending Radius: 5 x overall diameter
- Our stock will have a CPR Rating of Cca – Which means it potentially could be of interest for companies not because of it being BS5308 but purely for its Cca rating
What Applications is BS5308 Cable Used In?
Indoor installations generally used within industrial process plants for data & voice transmission services. Also used for the interconnection of electrical equipment and instruments, particularly in and around process plants, where transducer generated signals are transmitted through marshalled circuits to panels, controllers and associated devices.
Part 1 cables are widely used throughout the petroleum industry.
Type 1 unarmoured cables are generally for indoor applications.
BS5308 cables can also be used in intrinsically safe circuits - the outer Jacket would be Blue if being used for IS circuits
Also a very popular cable within the Building Management System (BMS) sector.
Stock: We will be stocking BS5308 Part 1 Type 1 & 2 cables in black with an LSHF sheath.
